Tour Martello
Point de départ d’Ulysse, la tour Martello de Sandycove est située au sud de Dublin (53.288667, -6.113613) et fait partie d’une escadrille de tours construites pour les raisons qui suivent :
Les tours Martello sont des petites forteresses défensives construites par l’empire britannique à partir des guerres napoléoniennes. Elles sont hautes d’environ 12 mètres (avec deux étages) et peuvent abriter un officier et 25 hommes. Leur structure ronde et leurs murs solides et épais les rendaient très résistantes aux tirs de canon tandis que leur hauteur en faisait une plateforme idéale pour une pièce d’artillerie lourde, montée sur le toit plat et capable de tourner sur 360 degrés. Quelques-unes étaient entourées d’un fossé pour améliorer leur défense.
Stephen Dedalus y vit en compagnie de son colocataire Buck Mulligan. Ils hébergent un troisième larron (Haines) pour quelques jours. Joyce lui-même y a très brièvement vécu. Depuis 1962 cette tour Martello abrite le James Joyce Museum de Dublin.
