[1] On prend la première lettre du premier mot du texte, bien des années plus tard on prendra le dernier et on le retournera. Dans le texte original : stately le premier mot. Yes le dernier. Ce que l’S ouvre, le S le ferme. D’où le choix d’un I pour le français. Bien des années plus tard, on sait d’avance qu’on terminera par oui. En allant plus loin (révision du 18 janvier 2014), on peut également inclure les trois lettres o - u - i du dernier mot dans le premier, comme c’est le cas en anglais. Peu de candidat en français capable de proposer un mot commençant par un i et contenant également un o et un u tout en collant au sens. Inouï, donc, c’est une révélation.

Le premier mot du roman, Stately, majestueux, solennel, contient aussi le oui final, yes, ses trois lettres terminales.

  • Surprenant, pourquoi ne pas respecter la ponctuation quand cela est possible et utiliser imposant ou impressionnant en ouverture ?
    Pourquoi aussi employer des tournures de phrases alambiquées ? J’aime les phrases limpides, lorsqu’elles sont envisageables.

    On pourrait écrire ceci : « Imposant, le dodu Buck Mulligan venant du haut de l’escalier, porte un bol de mousse sur lequel sont posés en croix miroir et rasoir. »

    Je n’ai peut-être pas compris les règles du jeu, si jeu il y a… Éventuellement, je peux participer dans la mesure de mes moyens.

    P.-S. Je ne parle pas ni ne lis l’anglais, ou si peu, mais je sais me servir des outils qui sont à la disposition de tous (sauf Antidote, ma belle béquille) et je n’ai pas lu les traductions précédentes d’Ulysse qui, me semble-t-il, ont influencées la traduction présente. Est-ce que je me trompe ?

    Il n’y a pas vraiment de ponctuation dans mon texte, ce qui découpe la phrase (ou les phrases) c’est la mise en page avec les retours lignes. Les tournures de phrases peuvent être simples ou alambiquées, selon les circonstances, mais j’ai toujours en tête, au moment de l’écriture, le rythme de la langue, c’est un élément primordial dans mes choix, on va dire, esthétiques.

    Le but du jeu, en réalité, n’est pas de produire une traduction académique d’Ulysse, les deux traductions déjà établies ont toutes deux leurs avantages et la dernière est somme toute récente. Le but du jeu, tel qu’il s’est imposé au fil de l’exercice, est de faire de chaque phrase, chaque jour, à la fois un fragment poétique indépendant et un morceau que l’on pourrait inclure dans un ensemble plus large (paragraphe, chapitre). La relation aux traductions précédentes est importante également puisque c’est à la fois un exercice d’écriture et un exercice de lecture (comparer les précédentes traductions entre elles et par rapport au texte original).

    Je termine également en précisant qu’aucune de ces pages n’est réellement définitive, je serai ramené à revenir dessus régulièrement. Par exemple, dans le cas de cet incipit, j’ai dans l’idée d’aller au bout de ma démarche et de faire commencer le texte par un mot (n’ai pas encore trouvé lequel) qui comporterait les trois lettres O, U et I, comme c’est le cas en anglais le Y, E, S.

  • Je n’ai pas compris le but de cet exercice. Faire une traduction mot à mot ? Je ne trouve pas la traduction de cette phrase très bonne personnellement. Le stately est mis en apposition, ce n’est pas pour rien, et ça rend un sens très différent de l’insérer sans virgules dans le corps de la phrase, mais il est impossible de traduire de façon satisfaisante et fidèle à l’œuvre phrase à phrase sans le contexte.
    Edit : Je n’avais pas compris non plus les règles du jeu, donc le but, c’est de faire de chaque phrase une production poétique autonome ? Pourquoi pas après tout ? Mais je ne suis pas sûre d’arriver à percevoir la poésie de phrase simples, je préfère les vrais haïkus.

    • Le but n’est pas de proposer une traduction fidèle, il existe deux traductions françaises qui le font très bien et de façon différente. Ici, on décompose le texte, de manière à pouvoir le ralentir considérablement et de faire de chaque phrase, ou fragment, un œuvre de piratage ou de falsification à part entière. C’est aussi se poser des questions différentes de celle du sens à proprement parler : les rythmes, les autres contraintes (ici par exemple, pour la première phrase, il fallait composer avec le fait que dans le premier mot ("stately") il y a déjà le "yes" final, et que la première lettre du premier mot est aussi la dernière lettre du dernier. D’où le passage au "inouï" qui n’est pas la traduction littérale de "stately". Bref, il y a plein de choses à faire, et on s’amuse (je m’amuse) à mesurer l’écart pris entre le texte réel et le texte piraté, par exemple dans son adaptation aux mondes du présent (puisque cet Ulysse se déroule dans l’époque où sa phrase a été mise en ligne).
